A Coconut Oil Questionnaire?
Dear Nurse Diana,
I am a firm supporter of Coconut Oil and just wish I had found it at an earlier stage of my wife's vascular dementia. The interest shown in your articles is overwhelming - 30,000 views.
There is no research into Coconut Oil as it is only a cheap food. My question is - Can you, on this site, do a little research? What I had in mind was asking viewers who have tried the Oil, to answer one of three questions.
1. Has it done some good?
2. Has it done nothing?
3. Has it done any harm?
You could ask another, Do you refuse to try anything that does not have full approval?
As there is no treatment for dementia, it would be fabulous if we could get some answers into the thousands for the above questions. Even if it tells me that I am one of only a few supporters.
I am sure that you could arrange a suitable questionnaire.

My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in May. Put on aircept and I started him on coconut oil in August. 9 months later he was tested again and has shown no decline. In fact many of the things he would forget on a daily basis he now remembers. We were told to continue what we were doing because it seems to be working.
My dads on his 18th day with Coconut oil, the results are unbelievable! I had him draw a clock for the third time since we started last night. It was actually a clock, numbers and all! 18 days ago it was nothing like a clock. There is absolutely no doubt the coconut oil is working. He drove over to my house today for lunch and just left to go work on his garden and back porch. Driving was out of the question 2 weeks ago. If anyone would like to discuss further, your welcome to email me, rioosocowboy@aol.com ,( Mike). You can call my dad and talk to him if you like, oh by the way, he couldn't use his cell phone a couple weeks ago. Now he looks up numbers in his directory and has full blown conversations (with some forgetfullness).

2/15/2012 Hi Rodge34
Yes, I agree that the coconut oil issue really brings out comments from people. And, I think it would be interesting to know more about what people who have used it for their loved ones have to say about their results.
A questionnaire may not provide the answers you and others may be looking for.
(1) It is very difficult to arrive at valid conclusions for a questionnaire done on an open forum such as on Alzheimer's Weekly. How do you control fraudulent answers? Would simple Yes or No questions really give valid results? From reading the many postings (pros and cons) of using coconut oil, I see where this is a hot topic. As you said "overwhelming - 30,00 views".
(2) Any company that asks for comments about their products is subject to some honest comments plus some fake comments. That has been proven numerous times by Amazon.com.
(3) Even firms who do surveys for other companies have problems coming up with questionnaires that can provide valid statistical results. That is one reason why most surveys will list a "+-" of a certain % for accuracy.
I have been posting to Alzheimer's Weekly for almost 4 year. My Mom recently entered the final stages of Alzheimer's. I have never used coconut oil with Mom. But, I am interested in finding out about the experiences of caregivers who have used it. Has it helped, not helped, caused any harm, etc.? How did coconut oil help their loved ones? How long did the benefit last? What type of coconut oil did they use --- only coconut oil, coconut oil + MCT, coconut oil blend, etc.?
Instead of a questionnaire, I am thinking of about setting up separate Threads under Nurse Dina's forum labeled: (1) How Coconut Oil Use Helped, (2) How Coconut Oil Use Did Not Help, and (3) Have Not Tried Coconut Oil Because ......... where people can give their experiences.
These titles for Threads are only my suggestion. I am interested in hearing from you, Rodge, and other caregivers as ways to setup Threads for people to leave their comments on their experiences.
