How much daily coconut oil helps Alzheimer's?

Anyone have any practical experience or guidelines with actually cooking or preparing food with coconut oil to treat dementia?

I read "Coconut Oil and Alzheimer's". Like tea and Psalms, sounds like it can't hurt and it may help.

The question is, how much are you supposed to take each day? It doesn't say anywhere what's a good amount to consume. Quantity must matter and how about time of day? Does it make a difference whether it's eaten at every meal or just in a single portion each morning?

Dosage of Coconut or MCT oil for Dementia

Hi Qbert,

When Dr. Mary Newport learned that the ingredient in a drug trial which was showing so much promise was MCT oil derived from coconut oil,  she used an equivalent amount for her husband.   That dose was 20 grams and it produced results.

You can check with your doctor to see if that or more is contraindicated. Some find that HDL levels and triglyceride levels and overall cholesterol levels improve with the use of coconut or MCT oil.

Watch videos with Dr. Mary Newport by clicking on this link.

As far as cooking with coconut oil, many use it to replace other oils in cooking and baking.

Anyone want to post recipes?

Hope that helps,

Dina

Doseage of Coconut Oil

I followed Dr Newport's guidelines of 20 gr per day, for my wife. I have found that after a year that this is too much and I have halved the dose.

As far as recipes go, I put this in my wife's porridge for breakfast and it goes unnoticed. Me, I put it on toast and cover it with jam. Either way it is not noticed. All very simple.

The good side is that my wife now takes more interest in what is going on around her and is speaking better. We reduced the dose because she seemed to be too hyper and has now steadied down to an acceptable level.

Our Doctor says that Coconut Oil can do no harm and equally that it can do no good.  That doesn't fit with the results that I have found. I have found that it helps my waterworks caused by prostate problems.

How much coconut oil with each meal?

CoconutKetones' Coconut Oil Dietary Guidelines for dementia recommends the following regimen:

Mix with food and increase in stages to avoid indigestion, cramping or diarrhea.

  1. Start with 1 teaspoon per meal (5 grams).
  2. Increase gradually to 4-6 tablespoons per day (60 - 90 grams).
  3. Spread this out over 2 to 4 meals.

A mixture of coconut oil and MCT oil can be even more effective taken in the same amounts. Mix 12 ounces of coconut oil with 16 ounces of MCT oil to get a more effective, steady, liquid source of ketones.

Sounds like the 20 grams per day discussed in earlier posts is kind of an average approach. The approach in this post starts lower and ends higher. Coconut oil doesn't sound particularly dangerous, but 90 grams sounds a little nauseating. I guess it's a kinda belly/brain tradeoff. indecision

Love coconut oil but it is so expensive

I love to put coconut oil on my toasted rye bread in the mornings with Marmite. It is delicious but a jar does not last long and is quite expensive to buy. It comes in a jam jar and is solid until added to something hot when it melts. Is this the type of coconut oil that is recommended?

If so how much would you expect to pay for a jar - here it is around £9 which is quite expensive for the size of jar?

Any ideas would be welcome.

Cost of Coconut Oil

Hi Sue, I live in England and buy coconut oil on line, it costs me about £8 per jar. A jar contains 400 gr, the daily dose is 20 gr so the cost is 40 Pence per day. I don't think you can get any cheaper treatment.

The melting point is 25*C, I do not keep it in the fridge and find it easy to spread on toast before good flavoured jam. For my wife I put it in porridge.

coconut oil

I started my mom on coconut months ago and found that just coconut oil did not show a lot of results as the Dr. says with her husband. I watch a video that a friend sent me of the Dr. and it shows her putting about 4 heaping tablespoons of coconut oil in some hot cereal. My mom would never eat all of that, but I gave her what I could with every meal and replaced all other oil and margarine with coconut oil. I still didn't notice her getting better like the Dr's husband. I went looking for the mct oil that is talked about and it is difficult to find, when I did manage to get it between the 2 oils, I would have had to give my mom more oil than her actual food. After trying that I went onto the internet and when I signed out a popup came on it took me to a health and fitness site, that had a bit on seniors health and I clicked on a link that took me to another site that has coconut oil and mct oil mixed together. I have been using that ever since and now I am starting to notice a big difference in my moms behaviour. So I guess this is the ketogenic diet

Coconut oil and MCT oil

Hello everyone,

I have been giving my 75 yr old Mom Ruth coconut oil and mct oil since early December 2011. The first dose we saw and improvement within hours. Mom has had frontal lobe dementia for 8 yrs now. Her twin brother Joe has always been on the lookout of a cure for his sisters dementia and always sends me helpful emails with links. Well this one email caught my eye and I thought what could it hurt? It was a link to coconut oil and mct oil which lead me to Dr. Newport's discover and more wonderful links. Finally some hope when there had been none! I love dementia weekly keep up the great work. Take joy everyone! Dianeheart

A blog on Coconut oil & MCT oil and My Mom

I will try to document as often as I can to this blog. I feel it is important to share my Mom's progress with coconut oil and mct oil.

Today I gave my Mom a shower nothing new here other then she was able to wash herself! Something she has not done in years. I used to try to get her to do this for herself but she just could not understand the process. Today a miracle happened! She took the washcloth and soap put them under the water made a lather and started to wash herself! She raised me to never give up and to always find a way to make it work. To be creative and to have as much fun as possible and I have mostly followed this advise and it is serving us both well these days.

Blogs and Coconut oil vs coconut butter

Hi

Cbcaper, I love your attitude, you appreciate the miracles each day as they come, and you don't give up!  You are welcome to post your progress here, we also have a section on the site called BLOGS where you can start a blog and add to it as you like.  You can find it by going to the top of this page and selecting the green tab called BLOGS-->MY BLOG.

Kadina, as I understand it, coconut butter is whipped up coconut with the fiber and the oil together, whereas coconut oil is the oil extracted from the coconut without the meat and fiber of the coconut.  Some say that the difference between coconut oil and coconut butter is temperature. Coconut oil solidifies below 80 degrees and some call the oil butter when it solidfies because its texture is similar to dairy or nut butter. When it is heated above 80 degrees, the butter becomes a liquid  they call coconut oil.

Hope this helps,

Dina

Steve Newport

I've seen the video that was dated 2008  I believe... and was wondering if there has been an up - date on Steve Newport's condition at the present time (Jan 31, 2012).  I have started my husband on the Coconut Oil in the past two weeks and he is up to four teaspoons now without any noticeable changes or diarrhea.  This is my first time and post on this site and hopefully I will learn through  other's experience how to be the best caregiver to my dear husband.

Steve Newport, Coconut Oil Quantity and more

Hi Peggy,

Welcome to our site.  I hope that you will find information on the site that is helpful to you.  Equally important, I think you will find that we have a very supportive group of readers and staff to whom you can reach out with any question.  Glad you are here.

You say that you have been giving coconut oil to your husband and have not seen any changes.  Click on this link and you will find Dr. Newport's recommendations on the site CoconutKetones' Coconut Oil Dietary Guidelines for dementia.   For most people she recommends the following:

...the goal would be to increase gradually to 4-6 tablespoons a day, depending on the size of the person, spread over 2-4 meals.  Mixing MCT oil and coconut oil could provide higher levels and a steady level of ketones. One formula is to mix 16 ounces MCT oil plus 12 ounces coconut oil in a quart jar and increase slowly as tolerated, starting with 1 teaspoon.

Dr. Mary Newport blogs about her husband and other related topics.  There you will find recent posts in which she discusses her husband's condition.  You can get to her blog called Coconut-Ketones by clicking here.  Here is an excerpt:

Steve's 3rd Anniversary

Today is the 3rd Anniversary of the day, May 21, 2008, when he began to take coconut oil and saw the improvements that changed both of our lives.

I posted an update about Steve on my website (www.coconutketones.com) in February 2011 and I am pleased to say that three months later things are going even better than they were at that time. He had a setback when he was on prednisone for gout during the holidays, but at this point he seems to have recovered from that and is back to his baseline about where he was this time last year.

Dr. Newport has also written a book which was recently published called Alzheimer's Disease: What If There Was a Cure? In her book, Dr. Newport details their story. You can click on the underlined title of the book above to purchase it from Amazon.

Keep in touch, let us know how its going,

Dina

Hi Sue I don't actually know

Hi Sue

I don't actually know how much of each. I started my mom on just virgin coconut oil and did not see any change in my mom after months. I had only found the MCT oil once and had to phone around for that, used the coconut oil on toast ect. and the Mct oil in sauces etc. I now buy it in bottles it's a coconut oil blend and it has both ready to use. This way I don't have to worry about how much of what. Sorry for not being of much help.

16 Days and going strong.......

This is my fathers 16th day, the results are incredible! Every day I see improvement. He still has his moments but overall, much improved from just two weeks ago. I have him up to 5/6 Tablespoons of oil a day. I give it to him in his coffee, with Activia Yogurt (you need to microwave a tablespoon about 16 seconds then stir it in), He drinks it straight from a glass after dissolving in Microwave, I make him Milk shakes, I cook with it (great French fries), I also will melt and put over vegetables.
You have to work them up to the amount I'm giving him otherwise it will disturb their stomach.
He went from being listless, glossy eyed, not able to hold a conversation or concentrate on TV to waking up happy, focused, he understands what were doing and remembers from one day to the next what's going on. No more glossy eyes.
As long as he gets a good nights sleep, he has great days. If he wakes up at night and stays up, he gets confused, hopefully that goes away with time.

Overall, working very well so far.

Hi LindaI hope you

Hi Linda

I hope you were directing your question for me. The blend makes my life even easier.I give my mom coconut oil blend from the web site alzorganics.com, so far it has been working great, although I did not see results in hours, it was more into a week or 2 and then most results I noticed were at about 21/2 - 3 months. But then the delusions were gone, the wandering, the aggression, she started showering on her own. So I guess first were the little things and then the bigger things and now others say they see a big difference in my mom when they come to visit. You won't be sorry for trying it.
