Coach Pat Summitt is a compelling figure for people living with a dementia such as Alzheimer's. In August of 2011 she announced her diagnosis of early onset dementia. She was at the height of her career as coach of the University of Tennessee's winning basketball team, the Lady Vols.
She continues coaching with support from her assistant coaches, maintaining a strong presence in daily team management.

Now you can sport a new t-shirt to show your support.
The University of Tennessee launched the campaign, called, "We Back Pat." It will benefit Alzheimer's Tennessee and UT Medical Center.
The shirts are $10.
Proceeds from the "We Back Pat" T-shirt and other items that are being developed will go directly to fund cutting-edge Alzheimer's research as well as fund Alzheimer's programs in Tennessee.

In addition to the "We Back Pat" campaign, recognition of all she has done for her players and fans is starting to pour in from other areas.
The NCAA will honor Coach Pat Summitt with the 2012 Gerald R. Ford Award.
The award recognizes a person who has been an advocate for college athletics over the course of his or her career. Summitt has won eight NCAA titles in her 37 seasons as Lady Volunteers coach, and her 1,075 victories is the most by any college basketball coach.
NCAA President Mark Emmert says the award honors Summitt for "the positive example she continues to set."
