You have a right to say "No" to proposed treatments of antipsychotics such as Seroquel®, Zyprexa®, Risperdal® and Haldol®.

Study after study has shown these medications to be over-prescribed in patients with dementias such as Alzheimer's.

They offer a quick solution to behavioral problems at the expense of good health and quality-of-life.

Medicare often covers them in nursing homes, making them an easier, more profitable solution than healthier, milder non-drug therapies.

The not-for-profit organization CANHR has published a guidebook on this subject.

The guidebook covers the basics on psychoactive drugs in nursing homes. It describes:

  • Uses
  • Side effects
  • Applicable laws
  • Practical tips

It is an excellent resource to help residents of care facilities and their families  in preventing psychoactive drug misuse and ensure the best of health.

To grasp just how severe this problem has grown to be, watch The U.S. Senate Committee on Aging special hearing entitled, “Overprescribed: The Human and Taxpayers’ Costs of Antipsychotics in Nursing Homes.” It is the USA's follow-up to the governement's Inspector General Report finding massive misuse of antipsychotic drugs to sedate and subdue residents with dementia. The Inspector General testified at the hearing, along with other long-term care experts. All agree non-pharmacological options have been underused in dementia care and offer superior outcomes to antipsychotics.

Through education, advocacy and political action, we seek to bring Californians together to end this harmful practice.
