Why Aren't Doctors Recommending Coconut Oil?
If Coconut Oil is working so good, why aren't doctor's recommending it? My husband is in his 4th year of Alzhemier's and getting angry a lot. I want to keep him at home as long as possible and wonder if this might help.
Our doctor recommended Axona. From what Dr. Mary Newport says, the active ingredient in Axona is similar to the ingredient in coconut oil that makes it helpful in dementia. It's just that Axona is FDA recognized, seems to be more concentrated, and is probably easier for a doctor to supervise since it has to be prescribed. So it is not that doctors are not recommending coconut oil, they are just recommending a version of it that has been "re-designed" for the world of prescriptions. In all fairness to doctors, in the malpractice-sue-happy world we live in, they are left with little choice but to only recommend things that won't get them into a lawsuit if it does not work perfectly. If a doctor recommends coconut oil, the doctor is on their own. If they recommend Axona, they have the backing of clinical trials, the FDA and the manufacturer. And if we want to go off and do a little research and use coconut oil or MCT oil to cut costs, we are free to do so.
It is important to recognize that coconut oil is a food, not a drug. It cannot be patented like a drug can, so there is little incentive to run expensive clinical trials on something that will not yield huge profits.
Here's an article shedding a bit more light on Qber's comments above about Axona versus coconut oil...

Hi I have been told that coconut oil and the medical field don't mix. Coconut oil is organic and Dr's are regulated by the association. My moms Dr. said he cannot even recommend it, because the association won't let him. I suppose it is all government.
