Why is Dementia Often Diagnosed So Late? Are People Afraid to Ask?

Two thirds of GPs say many people with dementia are not being diagnosed because they are not making an appointment to see their doctor, an Alzheimer's Society survey revealed. (A GP, or General Practitioner, is known in some countries as a family doctor or primary care provider.)

The survey of 382 GPs provides new insight into why diagnosis rates for dementia continue to be so low. Currently, just 43 per cent of people with the condition in the UK are diagnosed.

Abbott Agrees To $1.6 Billion Settlement

In a settlement deal regarding federal and state claims alleging the improper marketing of Depakote, Abbott Laboratories has agreed to pay out $1.6 billion. Dementia with Dignity

People living with dementia are often stripped of their dignity by the disease and the people who care for them. We often forget to help them maintain their sense of identity, and often treat them like children. How many times have your heard someone say: No you can't, Stop, Don't do that, etc? How much better if would be if people would say: Why don't we, would you help me, let's do this together. It is so much better to do things with someone rather than for them. Isn't that what we would want for ourselves?

A new study by researchers at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility at Vancouver Coastal Health and the University of British Columbia shows that implementing a seniors’ exercise program, specifically one using resistance training, can alter the trajectory of decline. Perhaps most importantly, the exercise program improved the executive cognitive process of selective attention and conflict resolution functions, as well as associative memory, which are robust predictors for conversion from mild cognitive impairment to dementia.
