MCT DIET VIDEO + INFO:

MCT oil generates ketones, which can help protect against dementia. Coconut oil is rich in MCT oil. What are healthier food sources? How much is a good daily amount to get the maximum benefit?

Check out the table, links and comments below the video for a better understanding of coconut oil’s benefits for people with dementia.

Continued below video…

Use the following table to make practical conversions:

The following is not medical advice. Be sure to consult your physician before trying this yourself.

  1. You may start with one teaspoon of coconut oil in each meal.
  2. If available, use a mixture of 1/2 coconut oil and 1/2 MCT oil.
  3. Increase the amount gradually, protecting against side effects.
  4. Try to get as much as 3 tablespoons per meal and two tablespoons at bedtime.

I have MCI and when I started using Coconut oil & MCT I started gaining weight. It freaked me out and I stopped. At one point in my life I had lost about 100 lbs and so I am very worried about gaining weight. I have been a Vegan for 5 or 6 years and am very aware of what I eat. I make sure to get enough protein everyday and for the first time since I lost the weight, I do not have to worry as much about my weight, but to consume that much Coconut oil per day, I have to eat less or omit other very healthy foods.I try to sneak a Tablespoon in some days, but if I try to consume the recommended amount, I start gaining weight (I also exercise regularly).

Hi Pat, I'm sure you know this, but just in case you don't, please make sure that you are supplementing with a good-quality, multi-form B12 since you are vegan. B12 deficiency can certainly lead to cognitive decline. Though AMA guidelines indicate that 300+ is acceptable. Guidelines in the rest of the world are 500+ for B12 levels. If you don't know your level, please test it. Additionally, a bit of extra body weight is a small price to pay for saving your brain. Small amounts of coconut oil, here and there, won't give you the results you're looking for. Skinny in an Alzheimer's facility or coffin is not nearly as fun as being chunky, vibrant and living independently. 🙂

The best way to deal with this is to Substitute coconut well for other fats in the diet and to reduce portions of carbs. Steve had Alzheimers so we were maximizing how much of these oils he was getting. I don't think that people looking for prevention would need to take as much as he was taking. I usually suggest somewhere between 3 and 6 tablespoons a day for prevention. This is about 400 to 800 calories A-day. If someone is on a 2000 calorie diet it should be relatively easy to work that in and figure out what foods to eliminate to maintain weight. Another alternative would be to take 2 to 4 tablespoons per day of MCT oil although I do think some whole coconut is beneficial because of the many other nutrients could be factors in memory and other health benefits. I hope this helps.

Coconut oil or MEDIUM Chain Fatty Acid, (… as in Omega-3 Fatty acid from Salmon, and Animal Fat), CANNOT POSSIBLY be the cause of weight gain… why? FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT….Basic Bio-chemistry!!!
MCFA = does NOT utilize INSULIN, the Fat Storing Hormone. PERIOD.

Comrade, fat does not make you fat by itself, but calories + insulin will and the calories can come from anywhere. And the fat doesn't drive the insulin (as you probably know). So the real question is what is going on in the diet besides the fat.

How many tablespoons of MCT oil should be taken a day if you already have dementia/ahzheimer's? What is the best way to take it? Can it be taken in juice?

I'm having trouble figuring out how to add that much coconut oil in my mom's meals. I use it in the am to cook her scrambled eggs and will put it on her toast. How else to you supplement in food?

Research cooking temperature on coconut oil and MCT oils. I believe it says no higher than medium temperature. I am concerned anything higher would negate its benefits but I don’t know. Would love to know the answer.

I wondered if anyone can tell me what the amount of tablespoons or ml's would be in milligram form?

What about the virgin coconut oil pills? I take the 2000mg tablets at night. I am taking 4 pills a day. I see symptoms of Alzheimer's in myself that I saw in my mom for years as I took care of her.

Is it that coconut oil specifically helps dementia caused only by Alzheimers, or helps any dementia regardless of cause (e.g., Lewy Body, vascular, etc.)?

It seems that the MCT oils in coconut oil may compensate for mitochondrial dysfunction, which gets serious sometimes, at some stages, in various types of dementia. In other words, it has been claimed to help with various types of dementia. When it helps, the claims are that one sees the positive changes rather rapidly. Some doctors recommend trying it out for a week or two, keeping a diary, and seeing if there are noticeable improvements. After all, no prescription is required and it is an inexpensive food.

I know it was suggested that coconut oil with the addition of MTC oil was recommended by Mary Newport. I was wondering how you would incorporate them together.
