Alzheimer’s Patient #1

160522-august.jpeg
In 1906, Dr. Alois Alzheimer first identified Alzheimer's disease. A 51-year-old woman, Auguste Deter, exhibited behavioral symptoms and memory loss. (Video+Article)

In this video, board certified internist and geriatrician Dr. Marc, in Louisville, Kentucky, tells the story of Dr. Alois Alzheimer and the first patient he described with the dementia that would be eventually be named for him.

Mrs. Auguste D., who Dr. Alzheimer met in 1901, was 51 years old at the time. She told him when asked to repeat her own name, “I have lost myself.” As Dr. Marc notes, that really encapsulates the feelings and frustrations experienced by so many who struggle with Alzheimer’s.
